While it\u2019s true that with all the carbon burned in transporting materials worldwide, creating a completely eco-friendly surfboard is nearly impossible, there\u2019s still a lot we can do as surfers and surfboard manufacturers to reduce our impact on the environment. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve been experimenting with a variety of natural and recycled fibers \u2014 both new innovations and time-tested materials \u2014 to find the right balance between sustainability and performance. My goal is to craft eco surfboards that maintain the strength, flex, and responsiveness surfers expect, while significantly reducing each board\u2019s overall carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

The Power of Hemp in Sustainable Surfboard Design<\/strong>
Hemp has been used as a fiber for over 10,000 years and remains one of the most sustainable materials on the planet. As a fast-growing member of the cannabis family, hemp is stronger and more durable than cotton, requires far less water to cultivate, and thrives without chemical fertilizers or pesticides thanks to its natural resistance to pests.<\/p>\n

When used as a cloth in surfboard construction, hemp wets out exceptionally well with resin. Its porous structure and impressive tensile strength make it one of the best natural fibers for creating eco surfboards that are both high-performing and environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n
